2003 Japanese Baseball – "Everything's
Fine"
The
2003 season opened with many "experts" tolling the death of Japanese
pro baseball as for the second time in three years NPB lost its biggest star to
major league baseball. This time it was
the Giants Hideki "Godzilla" Matsui taking his MVPs and flying out of
Japan to roam the pastures in the Bronx. Instead the Pro Yakyu season thrived, delivering the fans an
exciting and historic season. Among the
season highlights were Yakult's all-time great catcher, Atsuya Furuta, becoming
the 5th player in NPB history to blast 4 homeruns in one game. Kintetsu's Tuffy Rhodes became the all-time
leader in homeruns by a foriegn player ending the season with 288 total and
counting. Kyojin vet SS Masahiro Kawai
set a new world record by dropping down a career total of 514 sacrifice bunts
by season's end. Yokohama's masher
Tyrone Woods became the first player to have won a HR title in Japan and Korea.
Swallow's Atsunori Inaba, the Hawks'
Akihito Muramatsu and Tiger Shinjiro Hiyama each hit for the cycle in a 48 hour
period. Inaba's coming in a rain
shortened 5-inning game. In April
former Pro Yakyu star Leon Lee became the first African-American to pilot a
Japanese team taking over the reins of Orix.
The Hanshin Tigers led the Central league from wire to wire giving the
Kansai faithful their first crown since 1985.
The
Japan series was an exciting 7 game contest with, surprisingly, the Daiei
pitching staff making the difference in the 4 games to 3 Hawks championship. Each team won their home games in deciding
the crown for the first time in Japan Series history.
