1996 – "The Year of the bomb ... and the Yankees"

1996 was the year that the era that will likely become known as the "steroid era" manifested itself. Not only were there more home runs hit in MLB than in any previous year, but three teams hit more than the previous single-season team record. Mark McGwire hit 52 in 130 games. Brady Anderson, leadoff hitter for the Orioles, hit 50.

All the homers battered pitching, and partially obscured the Yankee's beating the Braves in the World Series for their first Series Championship in almost 20 years.

The 1996 "extra players" card set contains 441 players, including every player who played in the big leagues in 1996 and is not a part of the 25-man lineup in the regular card set.
