1989 – "The Bay Bridge Series, and
the quake"
The metropolitan
area of San Francisco - Oakland saw its first Series as the Giants took the
National League flag and the A's reigned in the American League.
The
A's, winning their second of three consecutive pennants, were lead by the
muscled pair of sluggers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire ... with their
incomparable closer Dennis Eckersly slamming the door on opponents. The Giants featured Kevin Mitchell and Will
Clark and more or less survived the National League's pennant race.
The
Series was won by Oakland in five, but not while it was interrupted by an
earthquake that hit the area just before the scheduled start of Game 3.
