1977 – "The Yanks are Coming"

The Yankees became World Series Champions for the first time since 1962.  Led by a potent offense and good pitching, they beat out the Orioles for the A.L. East Championship and then took the Royals in the Division Championship.  Led by newcomer Reggie Jackson, the Yanks were fielding a one-time all-star at every position.

In the Series, the Yanks were able to take out the Dodgers in six games, mostly off the power provided by Reggie (three homers in game six) and the pitching of Ron Guidry and Mike Torrez.

Elsewhere in MLB, the Royals and the Phillies began a rise to prominence which would lead to World Series appearances for both of them in the next several years.
