1972 – "Green and Gold ascends"

The new bully on the block, the Oakland Athletics, behind Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, and Reggie Jackson, met the early stages of the "Big Red Machine" in the World Series, and prevailed.  This was the beginning of a three-year run for Charlie Finley's A's and helped make Reggie Jackson a household name, a candy bar, and "Mr. October."

The Reds were also loaded -- Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, Johnny Bench, and led by Manager Sparky Anderson -- to name a few future Hall-of-Famers.

The Tigers and the Pirates won the other Divisions, and played outstanding seasons in the last year before the advent of the designated hitter rule.
