1964 – "Rising and Falling"

The Yankees won their 5th straight American League Pennant, but lost their second straight World series, pre-saging a decline in fortune which would last for a decade.  Mantle and Maris were still the stars and Joe Pepitone added considerable punch.  Whitey Ford had another fine season.  But they barely squeaked past the White Sox and Orioles, who finished, respectively, 1 and 2 games behind.

In the National League, the Cardinals were powered by the big bats of Bill White and Ken Boyer and featured a trio of starters; Ray Sadecki, Bob Gibson, and Curt Simmons.

The Series went 7 games, and the rising Cardinals prevailed over the declining Yanks.
