1961 – "The M&M Boys"
Mantle
and Maris assaulted Babe Ruth's home run record. The teammates were neck and neck until late in the season when
Mantle succumbed to injury with 54 homers.
Maris went on to break the record on the last day of the season, hitting
61.
The
Yanks, under rookie manager Ralph Houk, easily beat the Cincinnati Reds in the
World Series. The American League, in
it's first year of expansion, played the first 162-game schedule. Pitchers suffered as the likes of Mantle,
Maris, Norm Cash, and a number of others, hit for average and power.
The
National league saw it's fourth different winner in four years.
