1960 – "Maz and Casey"

The Yanks were back in the Series once again, after a year's respite, courtesy of the White Sox.  Berra, Mantle, and newcomer Maris provided the punch and strong pitching spread throughout the staff kept the opponents at bay.

The Pirates won with an equally well-balanced team, featuring Roberto Clemente, Dick Groat, and a staff led by Vernon Law, Bob Friend, and Roy Face.

The series see-sawed, with the Yanks winning big, and the Pirates just winning.  Finally, the Pirates won on the first World Series "walk-off" homer ever, when future Hall-of-Famer Bill Mazeroski blasted the ball over the left-field wall in the bottom of the ninth.

The Series defeat was a curtain call of sorts for Casey Stengal who was let go by the Yankees over the winter.
