1955 – "This is Next Year!"
The Brooklyn
Dodgers had never won a World Series, and their defiant rallying cry after each
disappointment (usually at the hands of the Yankees) was, "Wait 'til next
year!" In 1955, next year
miraculously appeared as "The Boys of Summer" finally defeated their
rivals in the World Series.
Brooklyn
put four future Hall-of-Famers; Duke Snider, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella,
and PeeWee Reese on the field. The
pitching staff, though not dominant, was capable and led by Don Newcombe. Hall of fame manager Walter Alston led the
Dodgers. On the spring roster were
three young pitchers who all made their mark with Hall-of-Fame careers; Don
Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, and Tom LaSorda.
Elsewhere
in the National League, Willie Mays hit 51 homers to pace the league.
The Yankees
featured Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Hank Bauer, and Bill Skowron. Whitey Ford and Bob Turley led the pitching
staff.
The
Series was hard-fought, but in the 7th game, Johnny Podres shut out the Yanks
and the Dodgers were champions.
599
