1951 – "Centerfield in New
York"
1951
marked the arrival of two rookies destined for greatness, Willie Mays of the
Giants and Mickey Mantle of the Yankees.
Partnered with Duke Snider of the Dodgers, they formed a Hall-of-Fame
slugging and great-fielding triad that roamed centerfield in New York for the
next seven seasons; "Willie, Mickey, and the Duke."
The
Yankees won their third consecutive pennant in DiMaggio's final season much as
they won the previous two, a strong, balanced, attack and the wizardry of Casey
Stengel’s platooning. Yogi Berra had a
typically strong season at the bat and old standbys Lopat, Raschi, and Reynolds
led the pitching staff.
The
Giants won a playoff thriller against the Dodgers just to make the Series. Al Dark, Monte Irvin, Sal Maglie, Larry
Jansen, and Jim Hearn teamed with Mays to hold off the Dodgers and propel the
Giants into the Series.
The
Series was anticlimatic, if not insignificant, considering the hoopla
surrounding the Giant's playoff win.
The Yanks won in six, for their third consecutive World Championship.
