1949 – "The ‘ol Perfesser"
A
well-worn and well-traveled Casey Stengel arrived to manage the Yankees, much
to the chagrin of many, including some of the Yankee's veteran stars. Five years later, after five consecutive
World Series victories, it appeared to be a brilliant move on the part of Yankee
management.
Stengel
proved to be the ideal manager for a team that had to rely on more than eight
players to win the pennant. Stengel
managed around a prolonged absence by DiMaggio and a month missed by Berra, and
guided the Yanks to a final game showdown with a powerful Red Sox squad led by
Ted Williams and Dom DiMaggio. The
Yanks won.
In
the National League, the young Dodgers, led by Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider,
PeeWee Reese, and Roy Campanella, held off Stan Musial's Cardinals and won the
pennant on the last day of the season.
The
Yanks were just too strong in the Series, beating the Dodgers in 5 games.
532
player cards--every 1949 Major Leaguer.
