1948 – "Spahn and Sain, and Pray
for Rain"
The Braves
rode their two horses, Spahn and Sain, hard, and ended up winning the pennant
over the Cardinals and a young up-and-coming Dodger team. Al Dark, Earl Torgeson, Bob Elliot and Jeff
Heath steadied the offense.
Meanwhile,
the Cleveland Indians took the American League with a heavy-hitting attack and
and equally impressive pitching.
Cleveland countered the Braves with Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby, Joe
Gordon, and Ken Keltner - while Bob Lemon, Gene Bearden, and Bob Feller held
down the mound - with some periodic assistance from an old rookie named Satchel
Paige.
The
Indians took the Series four games to two, as Lemon and Bearden just wouldn't
allow any runs.
542
