1933 PCL – "The first glimpse of
DiMaggio"
The early
Pacific Coast League was known as the third major league, and its rosters were
always filled with major-league-quality players who chose to play on the West
Coast, with its longer season, easier traveling schedule, better weather, and
similar pay structure to the big leagues.
The 1933 PCL featured 19-year-old rookie Joe DiMaggio racking up a
61-game hitting streak while leading the league in RBI his first season;
Mission outfielder Ox Eckhardt batting .414 with 315 hits; and the Los Angeles
Angels claiming the PCL pennant by 6½ games over the Portland Beavers. More than 55% of the players in this league
were former or future big leaguers, including Bobo Newsom, Jigger Statz, Cookie
Lavagetto, George Burns, Johnny Bassler, Vince DiMaggio, Cedric Durst, Bucky
Walters, Fred Haney, and many, many others.
201
