1914 – "The Miracle Braves"
The Indianapolis
Hoosiers won the inaugural season of the Federal League on the strong arm of Cy
Falkenberg (25 wins) and the hitting of rookie Benny Kauff.
The
Athletics, who were to be dismantled and rebuilt at the end of the season, won
the American League pennant and met the Braves in the World Series.
The
Braves were in last place in the middle of July. Composed of veterans, retreads, and castoffs, they were much like
the Mets of 45 years later. They got
hot and ended up winning the pennant by 8.5 games, mostly due to the strong
pitching of Dick Rudolph and Bill James, who started 73 games and won 54
between them.
The
Braves, after having seemingly come out of nowhere, demolished the Athletics in
four games, as Rudolph and James won two apiece.
741
player cards--every 1914 Major Leaguer.
All symbols necessary for both board game versions are printed directly
