1911 – "Home Run Baker"

A very strong Athletic squad featuring the pitching of Coombs, Plank, and Bender finished 13.5 games in front of the Tigers to win the AL pennant. Strong performances by Frank Baker, and Eddie Collins paced the hitting. Ty Cobb hit .420 for the Tigers and stole 83 bases.

The Giants beat out the Cubs by 7.5 games. They were led by the pitching of Christy Mathewson and Rube Marquard. A well-balanced attack, led by Larry Doyle and Chief Meyers, was featured by the Giants.

Frank Baker's two homeruns in the Series earned him the eternal nickname of "Home Run Baker". Baker led the league with 11 homeruns during the regular season.

In the Series, the Athletic pitching was just too strong, and they beat the Giants in 6 games.
